IM 70.3 Haugesund

Race Report

I tapered right off for this race and was expecting to do very well having raced well in my previous two races off hard training weeks, unfortunately that was not the case, I had an average swim missing the chase pack that included Chris Mc Cormack, Andeas Dreitz, George Potrebietch and a few other good athletes. I would have had to been swimming at my best to make it into this pack but I knew it was possible. Part of the reason for me not making it into the pack is my lack of quality 70.3s this year as in the Ironman 70.3s the swims start off very quick and I think you need to do a few to get into the rhythm of them and get the tactics rights.

Onto the bike and I settled into a rhythm but had no idea how well I was going as I couldn’t see anyone in front of me and had no idea who was behind me. It turns out that my bike wasn’t to bad and I got off the bike in 10th place not a very good position but only 4 minutes behind 2nd place. I knew that with the runs I’ve been doing in training a 1h11 half marathon is possible if at my best and certainly a 1h 14 at worst unfortunately I had an absolute shocker on the run and only managed to run at 6.02 pace for the run on what was a fast course in good running conditions, had I been able to execute a 1h 14 run I would have been 4th. In the end I finished 8th, I would love to have an excuse to share with you all regarding my performance however I don’t have one and was actually very deflated and upset as I can’t tell you how gutting it is to run over 30 seconds a mile slower then what I’ve been doing in training.
